Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion has just announced the availability of the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) Social Platform SDK v1.0 for BlackBerry WebWorks, a tool aimed at offering developers the ability to integrate the messaging platform with their applications.

The new SDK was already made available for download, and can be found on Softpedia as well, via this link. Through it, developers can add social interactions with BBM in their BlackBerry WebWorks application, RIM notes.

The new development tool can be used in conjunction with the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK v2.2.

The APIs it brings along should provide developers with the following:

- Access and update fields in the user’s profile such as status, avatar and personal message create app-specific custom areas within the user’s profile for promoting your app and recent activity related to it, e.g. achievements - Initiate BBM chats with BBM users - Initiate file transfers - Share applications for download virally with friends in the contact list - Initiate application-to-application background communication through BBM for sending and receiving application signaling, data.

Developers will also benefit from a series of other changes that complement the release of this SDK, such as new sample code and documentation for a BBM version dependency checker, or the inclusion of all BBM WebWorks APIs into the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK as of version v2.2.

Moreover, they will find the BBM WebWorks API documentation being published with BlackBerry WebWorks API Reference.

Developers who would like to do on-device testing will have to upgrade to the new BlackBerry Messenger 6.0. They will also have to make sure that the handsets are running under BlackBerry smartphones versions 5.0 or later.

“To get started with the BBM Social Platform SDK 1.0 for BlackBerry WebWorks and review all the supported features, be sure to check out BlackBerry Developer Zone’s BBM Social Platform page,” RIM notes in a recent blog post.
