IT security company Avast is warning Android users about a bogus Avast Free Mobile Security application that’s designed to trick them into handing over some money.

The application in question, named “com.avastmenow,” has an interface that’s similar to the genuine Avast Free Mobile Security. However, the infection warnings it displays are actually bogus.

This is a classic trick to make users pay $100 (€76) to have the so-called threats removed.

Experts warn that those who download the fake antivirus application can also end up with their smartphones blocked.

Avast has updated its virus database to make sure its solutions identify and neutralize this particular threat.

To avoid installing malicious apps, make sure you only download them from trusted sources.
