Georges Auberger, VP Engineering for Songbird, announced yesterday, the 10th of March, the release of Songbird 1.1.1. Many new features and improvements, as well as several bugfixes are part of this new version. The memory performance was much improved through some tweaks applied to the database. This will benefit mostly those with huge libraries, with 100,000 or more tracks.

Songbird 1.1.1 highlights:

· On demand fetching of album artwork – users can right-click on a track and select "Get Album Artwork"; Songbird will retrieve it by default from Last.fm, but other sources can be specified; · Watch folder – a very useful feature that allows users to select a "watched" folder in order to automatically synchronize its content with Songbird's Library; · Better sorting with support for unicode collation and improved handling of track titles starting with definite or indefinite articles ("The," "A"); · Normalization support – if replay gain information is included in a track's metadata, Songbird will automatically adjust the playback gain according to that information; · The size of the installer package was reduced by approximately 45%; · 7digital MP3 Store Add-on was added to Songbird's service pane, providing access to said store; 320kbps quality MP3s are available through this portal. About Songbird

Songbird is an open-source, very customizable, audio player. The developers are still working hard to improve it, aiming to create a non-proprietary, cross-platform and extensible way to play, manage and discover music. Songbird integrates many third-party services, such as: mashTape, Last.fm scrobbling, Concert Tickets, SHOUTcast Radio. A full-featured web browser, automatic updates, multi-language support, smart playlists, custom user interface, gapless playback and add-on support are some of Songbird's strong points.
