More players will see what it has to offer

Total War: Attila is one month away from launch and it might be one of the most important releases in the history of the franchise, given the relative disappointment that greeted the initial delivery of Rome II and the voices in the community that are criticizing the decisions made at The Creative Assembly.

Mike Simpson, the creative director at the studio, claims that his team is aware that it needs to introduce a major leap forward in order to satisfy the fan base and make sure that the franchise evolves in interesting ways.

He tells VentureBeat that “That’s both good and bad. The good side is that the franchise moves on and we end up producing new stuff all the time. The difficult side is that we keep rewriting our own technology. Sometimes we end up being more ambitious than we can deliver and it takes us a while to catch up.”

The developer also explains that there are five teams at The Creative Assembly dealing with Total War and that one of them is dedicated to support for older titles, which might mean that Rome II will get more updates and content in the coming months.

Attila aims to change the nature of the franchise

The developers have previously talked about Total War: Attila as the first survival strategy game, with the player asked to first make sure that his faction can survive before thinking about the conquest of any more land.

This will be especially hard for those who want to play as the Western Roman Empire and redress their decline.

Simpson says that historical factors are well presented in Attila and it will be hard to make sure that Rome escapes from the attacks of the various barbarians eying its territory.

But he also explains that the team wants to give players choices and that “You can choose one of the easier barbarian factions. There are levels of difficulty as well. Even playing the western Romans, if you set the difficulty level to easy it’s not that hard.”

Attila is set to introduce climate change as a major strategic map concern, with fear and fire both playing a much bigger role in the tactical battles.

The new Total War will be out on February 17 on the PC and those who place a pre-order will get access to extra factions to play as.
