Since its debut, a netbook was seen as a small-sized, low-power and low-cost computer system that could provide the end-user with a portable, Internet-capable computing solution. However, this type of devices has grown to something quite different, incorporating new features that have ultimately made it compete with some of those lower-end notebook PCs. Nevertheless, providing end-users with a Web-connected, portable computer system has remained the focus of some companies such as Litl. This company is responsible for the release of the webbook computer and operating system.

Seen as a new way for users to enjoy online photos and other things that are available via an Internet connection, the Litl webbook is described by the company as “an Internet computer for the home.” The system features an 1.6GHz Atom processor, paired with 1GB of RAM, 2GB of flash storage and a GPU acceleration for H.264 video. Unlike other Atom-based devices that have recently been launched, this system comes with a home-grown, always-on OS.

“As everything from music and photos to email and social networking moves online, it’s clear that the web is transforming personal computing. And yet, most homes are still using computers and software based on thinking from more than 30 years ago.” Litl’s Founder and CEO, John Chuang, explained. “We knew that to really meet the needs of home users – from kids to parents and grandparents – we needed to design an entirely new system that would make the web engaging, entertaining and fun.”

Additional features of the new device include a 12-inch display, a WiFi b/g wireless support, a headphone port, a USB 2.0 and HDMI connectivity. While no hard drive is available on the device, all the storage is handled in the “cloud.” Price-wise, you are looking at a device that will go for US$699 with an optional remote control that is available for US$19. Available for ordering online through the company's website, the unit can be used both as a netbook and as a passive TV device.
