Asustek has been rumored to work on a desktop computer since January, but the upcoming Eee PC 900 got all the customers' attention. However, the new desktop system from the Taiwanese PC manufacturer can be regarded as the desktop alternative to the Eee.

The EP20 desktop computer is officially called the "Digital Home System EP20", but right underneath its name, the manufacturer added the well-known "Easy to Play ; Easy to Learn ; Easy to Work" phrase. If the inscription is more than a misplaced slogan, the company could be hinting at the fact that the desktop will be part of the Eee family as well.

The technical specifications for the desktop system are still unknown, but the company claims that it will come in a smaller form-factor than regular computers. Asustek seems to continue taking advantage of miniaturization, given the fact that it has played an important role in Eee PCs success. The computer is sure to come with Hi-Fi Stereo and Dolby Digital Live support, as well as Eee's operating system, the Linux-based Xandros.

The EP20 desktop model is a silent machine, thanks to the included coolers. Given the act that it already comes with high-definition sound, we get quite a nice home-theater PC system. However, there is no word on the graphics card and optical media, so the HTPC may suit the audiophiles, but not the video enthusiasts.

According to Asustek, the first units of the Eee PC desktop alternative will be built on Celeron processors that will be replaced later with Intel's upcoming Atom processor, previously known as "Diamondville". Therefore, the model might come in either single-core or dual-core versions of the chip, but there is no specific date for the CPU transition.

Pricing will be extremely affordable. Previous reports from Asustek claims that the desktop-based Eee PC will hit the shelves at a starting price of $199, but, given the fact that it will come in the second quarter, some modifications in pricing are also expected.
