WiMAX capability will be available for other Asus notebooks

After Asustek CEO declared in January that their new lineup of Eee PCs, the Eee PC 901, would be delivered with WiMAX capabilities, it appears that the company decided to keep WiMAX out of the Eee PC. WiMAX will be made available as an option to contract customers, making Asus consider shipping 15% of its notebooks with WiMAX capabilities, in 2008.

It appears that officials at Asus don't believe that the WiMAX wireless standard will reach maturity in 2008, which is why they see no point in delivering their Eee PC with this option. Asus fans will still be able to acquire WiMAX-capable notebooks as the company is prepared to release WiMAX-based VX2, U6 and V1 notebooks by the end of the year. The 14.1- to 15.4-inch notebooks will be made available mainly on the US market, as this is the largest WiMAX market.

Since its release in 2007, the Eee PC brand has had millions of units sold throughout the world. With the newly release Eee PC 900 evolved version, Asustek plans to increase the number of Eee PC users, as it brings more features and higher performance levels, than its previous version. Until its release, a serious number of rumors have circled the media environment, making this product one of the most talked about, this year.

WiMAX is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing users with a reliable platform for a metropolitan wireless network. Based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, WiMAX is also known as WirelessMAN. Although the technology isn't that new, efforts of bringing it to a larger scale are still underway, involving some of the biggest names in the industry.

Asustek has had some serious success with its Eee PC, which made its competitors release Eee PC-like notebooks. Eee PC notebooks are mainly targeted towards students and low-end users.
