Asustek Computer, generally better known as Asus among computer users, announced that a series of firmware updates will be available to download from its servers. Those firmware updates are targeted at mainboards that will support Intel's new Core 2 central processing units (CPUs) with 1333MHz processor system bus (PSB). Apparently, Asustek enables 1333MHz bus support even on motherboards that do not officially support it. The move allows owners of appropriate platforms to upgrade to newer chips without mainboard change.

"As the leading motherboard manufacturer, our customers have come to expect the latest solutions from us. Our series of Intel Core 2 Extreme/Core 2 Duo 1333MHz PSB-ready motherboards once again proves our leadership position for the newest and most advanced processors," said Joe Hsieh, director of Asustek's motherboard business and cited by the hardware information site Xbitlabs. Asus has a wide range of mainboards designed to house one of Intel's new processors, including boards based on Intel's own 3-series core-logic sets. They will include support for Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel Core 2 Extreme chips with 1333MHz PSB with motherboards powered by the following chipsets Intel P965, Intel 975X, Nvidia nForce 650i SLI and Nvidia nForce 680i SLI.

Users that have motherboards equipped with a 775 socket that do not support the new 1333MHz frontside bus and do not wish to upgrade their mainboards either, can update their firmwares in order to enable higher speed FSB support. Because the Intel P965 and Intel 975X chipsets support speeds greater than the official Intel approved ones, Asus decided to enable the 1333MHz frontside bus through a simple firmware update.

"Asus will always keep in step with the latest developments and provide hardware and firmware updates for optimal Intel Core 2 Extreme/Core 2 Duo 1333MHz PSB performance and functionality. Also, more Intel Core 2 Extreme/Core 2 Duo 1333MHz PSB-ready Asus motherboards will be announced soon," the company said in a statement.
