The device has been recently approved by TENAA

Just like many other handset makers, Asus is trying to refresh its lineup of Android smartphones with new series of devices. Considering the fact that the company’s Zenfone family has been received positively by Android fans, Asus’ job isn’t as easy as one may think.

The next smartphone that the company plans to launch in the coming weeks is dubbed X002 and does not seem to belong to the Zenfone series, which makes us believe there might be room for a brand new family of Android phones.

Spotted by the folks over at GSMArena, the Asus X002 recently received the approval of TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission, which indicates that the smartphone is likely to go official very soon.

The so-called Asus X002 made its way onto the GFXBench database as well, so it’s almost certain that it will make its debut eventually.

Moving on to specs, judging by what’s been confirmed by the TENAA filing, this is a mid-range smartphone that will hit shelves in China.

In fact, the device has already been branded with China Mobile’s logo on the back, so there’s no doubt that it will be released in the Mainland initially.

If Asus decides to launch the X002 – or whatever the name – in other countries, then there might be more than one version of the smartphone.

That might be the case, considering that the GFXBench listing mentions the Asus X002 as packing 2GB of RAM, whereas the handset appears with 1GB of RAM at TENAA.

There might be two versions of the smartphone launched, depending on the region

Apart from the amount of RAM, both versions seem to pack similar specs. First of all, Asus X002 is equipped with a 64-bit 1.5GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6732 processor inside and a Mali-T760 graphics processing unit.

The smartphone will not come with dual-SIM capability, but it will offer LTE Cat.4 support, as well as other connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microUSB 2.0, and GPS with A-GPS support.

On the back, Asus X002 will pack an 8-megapixel photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash, and video recording, while in the front there will be a secondary 5-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls.

The smartphone will come with 8GB of internal memory and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB). The X002 has been confirmed to sport a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution.

Last but not least, Asus X002 is said to ship with the Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system out of the box, which isn’t the last version of the OS released by Google.
