The upcoming game required a lot of work from Ubisoft due to its complexity

Ubisoft's Alex Amancio, the director of the upcoming Assassin's Creed Unity, has confirmed that the new title has been in development for about four years, and that it's taken such a long time to evolve because there were many unknown factors.

Assassin's Creed Unity promises to usher in a new era for the action-adventure franchise developed and published by Ubisoft, as not only does it introduce a new protagonist, in the form of Arno Dorian, but also a new historical setting, that of the French Revolution.

Besides the new hero and the time period, Ubisoft has also overhauled some of the core gameplay mechanics of the series, including the combat, the parkour, or the stealth ones.

The development is currently led by Director Alex Amancio and, as part of a special questions and answers feature on Twitter, via NeoGAF, the designer has shared plenty of details about Unity.

Amancio previously led the creation process for Assassin's Creed Revelations and has confirmed that Unity required a much bigger effort from him and the team.

"Both projects are very different in that the challenge lies in two very different areas of the game. For Revelations, it was about concluding the trilogy of one of the most beloved characters in Assassin's Creed. For Unity, we had four years, but because we want to reinvent the fundamentals, we were working with more unknowns," he has said.

Amancio has also stated that the delay, which was confirmed for the game last week, is a necessary one, even if it spans just two weeks. According to the developer, the polishing done in just that period can result in a much better game overall.

"When the game comes together at the end, we can get the most done in polish. In those last two weeks, the little details can add up. They can be the difference between a good game and a great game. Making a game is extremely interesting. Every day is a new challenge. There's no specific set of rules You need to treat every situation like a new challenge."

Last but not least, the director has also mentioned that the solo and cooperative missions are going to take place in the same campaign, although their nature differentiates them.

"Everything happens within the same world. Certain missions are related to Arno's redemption quest. While other missions are related to the Brotherhood and their dealings in the French Revolution, those are co-op. Both are available to Arno and comprise his story."

Assassin's Creed Unity is currently set to appear this November for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Right alongside it, the new Assassin's Creed Rogue is also going to launch for PS3 and Xbox 360.
