Unity aims at representing all sorts of social categories

Assassin's Creed Unity aims to deliver a pretty accurate portrayal of the French Revolution and this means including multiple social classes besides the nobles and the common folk, such as the bourgeoisie, which had a big impact on those events.

Unity launches later this year and Ubisoft has made it abundantly clear that it marks a new beginning for the franchise, delivering a fresh historical setting, in the form of the French Revolution, as well as a new protagonist, Arno Dorian, not to mention an accurately recreated version of Paris.

The French Revolution setting certainly has a lot of potential and Ubisoft has now gone a bit more in-depth about the social maneuvering during that murky period of history.

According to the studio, while the revolution could be imagined as a struggle between the common folk and the noble people, the linchpin faction proved to be the bourgeoisie, which used the money it attained to acquire the power held almost exclusively by the nobles.

Ubisoft explains the actual events on the UbiBlog, using even recent events like the 99 percent movement from the US.

"While pop historians have a tendency to oversimplify the French Revolution as an analogue to the 99% Movement from a few years ago, that’s not quite the case. Instead, it’s more like the 4% (the bourgeoisie) who incited the 95% (the starving masses) to rise up against the 1% (the ruling class) in order change the way the world works."

"Of course, with so many players involved in such a convoluted state of affairs, there was ample opportunity for others to manipulate the events behind the scenes."

The shadowy manipulation was orchestrated by the Templar order, and according to Ubisoft's Alex Amancio, players will explore more of the motivations employed by the knights in Unity.

"There’s always somebody in the shadows – murky threats that are trying to use this as a way to catapult their own vision," he explains. "So our main villain in the game is that character who’s sort of pulling the strings because he’s trying to change society toward something that he believes is the right way to go for the Templars."

Seeing as how the Templars believe that the best way to assert control is to offer those who are being controlled the illusion of free will, players shouldn't expect all sorts of villainous actions from their rivals, as plenty of surprises are in store, according to Ubisoft.

Assassin's Creed Unity is set to debut for PC, PS4, and Xbox One this fall.
