Ubisoft has announced that Assassin's Creed II has managed to sell more than 6 million units worldwide since the release date, judging by internal company figures. The game managed to outsell its predecessor by more than 40%, selling more than 1.6 million copies in its first week.

The studio is saying that the game will pass the 9 million copies mark until March 31, when it sees the end of the current fiscal year. Players can get Assassin's Creed II on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and on the PlayStation 3. Judging by the way the first game in the series handled the issues, a PC port might appear at some point in 2010.

A Ubisoft representative has also confirmed that the publisher is ready to put out a new standalone episode in the series in the period between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011. The new content will again feature Ezio, the protagonist of the second game in the series, and is set to include a multiplayer component for the first time in the history of the series. The setting will probably be again the Medici period of Italy's history but no details on the length of the new experience or to its place in the mythology were offered.

The possibility of multiplayer in Assassin's Creed is certainly intriguing. Given the unique abilities the Assassins have, it will be interesting to see them going one against the other, moving on the rooftops while getting ready to take each other out.

Ubisoft might also be thinking about including a cooperative mode that sees multiple Assassins hunting the same target, working together to take apart a tough defensive position in order to get to the man they need to kill. The new episode will probably be released towards the Christmas shopping period.
