Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will have a new present day protagonist and he'll be an Abstergo employee who's been tasked by his Templar bosses to investigate the life of Edward Kenway, the actual hero of the new game.

Assassin's Creed games have not only delivered impressive historical experiences but also had an important component that unfolded in the present day, culminating with the adventures of Desmond in Assassin's Creed 3.

Now, for the latest installment, the modern day protagonist will change, as an Abstergo employee will plug into the Animus machine and explore the adventures of Edward Kenway, according to Ubisoft's Karl Von Der Lutte, who talked with VG247.

"With Assassin’s Creed 3 we had Abstergo Entertainment ‘make’ the multiplayer, and that was on a separate disc," he said. "When you loaded it up you’d see Abstergo. Now in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, everything is Abstergo. Desmond is no more and you, in the present day, play as an Abstergo employee. Your job is to research people that Abstergo find interesting and in this case it’s Edward Kenway."

According to Von Der Lutte, both Kenway and the new character will be conflicted in the story and will learn much more about the Assassins and Templars that worked back in 1700s and in 2013.

What's more, the new protagonist will also meet some familiar characters and interact with many during the present day plot.

"You’ll come across some familiar characters, at first you’ll have no idea about the Assassin’s versus the Templars. You’re just working for Abstergo but you’ll start getting contacted by modern day assassins who are trying to get you to do certain things for their agency," he added.

"We still have present day missions but you’re not a high-flying assassin with lots of free-running abilities and such. It’s much more, you’re an employee confused about your environment like, ‘What is behind this? What are the Templars? What are the Assassins? Why are they trying to contact me?’ So it’s less about gameplay, more about narrative."

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is out in October for PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, and in November for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
