Comedian Artie Lange, Howard Stern’s sidekick, has been hospitalized on Saturday for reasons that were not disclosed to the public, his rep telling the media such matters would remain only between him and his doctor. It would seem that the funnyman had sunken back into depression and, in an attempt to end his own life, he stabbed himself nine times, the New York Daily News writes, citing ongoing reports.

When word of the hospitalization got out in the media, Lange’s rep would only say that, while the report was accurate, further details would not be released to the public. Sources on the inside are claiming that the reason for keeping matters under wrap is that doctors are concerned for the star, as he had attempted suicide. Lange was found in his apartment by his mother, having inflicted upon himself six hesitation wounds and three deep ones, the report goes on to say.

“Lange’s hospitalization reportedly occurred after the comedian stabbed himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, according to a published report. According to a law-enforcement source, Lange’s mother called 911 after entering his Hoboken apartment and finding the blood-stained comedian Saturday morning. Lange’s mother reportedly came to visit him to drop off food when she discovered her injured son, who sustained six ‘hesitation wounds’ and three deep plunges,” the aforementioned publication says.

Though Lange was reportedly in a very bad mental state, his colleague Howard Stern apparently had no idea about it. Speaking on his Sirius Satellite Radio show the other day, the famed host lashed out at the inside source that spilled the beans on the suicide attempt to the media, while also expressing his regret and shock about the whole thing. News of Lange’s condition should have stayed in the family because, by all means, this is a family matter, Stern went on to say.

“I would love to know who the scumbag is who releases that to the press, because this is a private matter. I don’t know what to say. I work with Artie, I love Artie. Everyone has their demons, including myself, but he’s wrestling with some serious stuff... When I heard the news it was too much to bear. I thought we were out of the woods with that and it wouldn’t come out. I was surprised and glad that Artie’s situation had been kept quiet... I’m angry about it, I’m sad about it. I don’t know what to think. I’m all over the place emotionally,” Stern said on his show, as quoted by PopEater.
