14 DAY TRIAL // Maria Shriver filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger a very long time ago but, even though 2 and half years have passed since the cheating / paternity scandal he was involved in, they’re still legally married. According to a new report, Arnie is doing everything he can to not change that.
It’s not that he loves Maria as some reports would have it several months back, or that he hopes they might still find a way to get back together and put the scandal behind them, TMZ says: the former Governor of California is simply a very practical man and, right now, it’s best if he stayed married.
The number one reason he doesn’t want the divorce proceedings to move forward is the lack of a prenuptial contract. This means that, under California law, they have to share everything they have by half, which, in turn, means Maria would be walking away with a huge fortune.
Schwarzenegger’s estate is estimated at $400 million (€292.5 million), so Maria would get $200 million (€146.2 million) as part of the divorce settlement. Insiders swear for the aforementioned e-zine that he is simply not ready to part with this kind of money.
The two also have a minor child together, but they have agreed on all aspects pertaining to the custody – so the only explanation for still not being divorced is money.
“As for the second reason Arnold's in no hurry, we're told he's getting pretty serious with his girlfriend, physical therapist Heather Milligan. If Arnold gets divorced, the pressure's on for him to pop the question... and Arnold's not necessarily a one woman kind of guy,” TMZ adds.
That last part of the quote is a dig at how he threw his 25-marriage down the drain to have an affair with a live-in housemaid, with whom he also had a child, a son. News of this broke online, and Arnold confessed to the years-long affair in couples therapy sessions, blindsiding Maria completely.
