Developer ArenaNet has revealed that it is already working on the first full expansion for its MMO Guild Wars 2 while also offering information on how the team plans to deliver smaller, free content updates to the game in the meantime.

Speaking on the official forums of Guild Wars 2, Collin Johanson, who is the game director at ArenaNet, told players, “No need to buy them. Gw2 will feature consistent free content updates and in-game events going forward. Our goal is to make it so you get more from Gw2 for free than you get from a game you pay a subscription for.”

He added, “On top of a large amount of free bonus content, we will be expanding on offerings in the Black Lion Trading Company going forward, as well as be doing large-scale expansion content down the road.”

Johanson says that ArenaNet believes that it is its duty as an MMO developer to give players more content to play with and appreciates the fact that many of those playing Guild Wars 2 are ready to pay for it.

ArenaNet uses a different business model for its games, asking gamers to pay for the initial purchase of the game and any expansion, while allowing players to engage with the MMO for as long as they want without paying a monthly subscription.

For the first Guild Wars, the company launched a number of four expansions that sustained the MMO in the long term and probably plans to do the same for the sequel.

Guild Wars 2 has sold 2 million copies since it was launched, which already makes it a commercial success.

Details on the first expansion for the game are expected in the coming month.

On September 25 World of Warcraft, one of Guild Wars 2’s main rivals, gets the Mists of Pandaria expansion.
