Protection comes in many forms nowadays and as more and more portable devices offer the possibility to store data the greater the chances for these to get hit by malware, rendering the data corrupt or worse, sending copies to a remote location under the malicious control. Luckily, even for portable devices there is more than one solution. The one within easy reach is to install protection software on them yourself, while a more sophisticated one is to buy the device with protection bundled in.

ArcaVir from ArcaBit is packed in a pendrive in order to protect the device against malware. The multiple functions of the antivirus include scanning all files that are copied to and from the portable device, at the same time protecting the operating system as well (Windows 32- and 64-bit). The application is safe against accidental or intentional deletion as the pendrive is split into two partitions: one for storing your data and one for non-erasable data where ArcaVir resides. For those familiar with the U3 smart drive this should not strike as a novelty.

Depending on the edition of the software you choose, you can benefit from a 2GB or 4GB pendrive. Thus, for ArcaVir 2009 Home Protection (works for five systems) you'll get a 2GB pendrive for approximately $50. Buying an ArcaVir System Protection 2009 license for at least five machines (approximately $79) will bring you a complementary 4GB pendrive.

The ArcaVir-bundled pendrives come with an autonomous operating system, ArcaNix, which allows you access to the files stored on the computer in case Windows is too damaged. Not only can you back up your data but the features of the antivirus are unaffected, giving you the possibility to remove threats, viruses, trojans and other sort of malware as well as bring malware definitions to the latest update.

ArcaBit, the company developing ArcaVir, has been founded with the aim to deliver complex solutions for comprehensive system security. Its activity includes developing proficient alternatives for protecting Windows, Linux or FreeBSD operating systems, but also servers: Microsoft Exchange and Novell NetWare. Creating antivirus suites bettered with firewall or registry monitoring modules is also part of ArcaBit's activity.
