A hit-and-miss source of Apple rumors has gone on record today to inform that Apple may be planning the introduction of an all-new Macintosh lineup that will be so different, it may even deserve a new moniker altogether.

Japanese blog Macotakara claims to have heard from an anonymous source in Apple’s supply chain that Cupertino “seems to be preparing” to launch a new Mac line-up that is “absolutely different” from the company’s current Mac offerings.

[admark=1]These all-new systems may launch by the end of this year, this source allegedly said.

The tipster could not provide any specifics, but did stress that the new computers are “clearly different” from the current Macs, therefore Apple may advertise them using a new name as well.

As noted above, Macotakara has a mixed track record when it comes to Apple’s roadmap. The blog, however, has issued accurate predictions in the past.

It should be noted that Apple’s Macintosh line, both portable and desktop, is one of the strong pillars of its entire business.

Customers have grown accustomed to calling them Macs and there’s no indication Apple would have it any other way.

In fact, the term “Mac” is almost synonymous with Apple as a company, therefore we have reason to believe at least the name will stick, if the other claims - of radically different computers - pan out eventually.

Apple refreshes its Macintosh computers on a semestral and sometimes a trimestrial basis, making it unwise for the company to cannibalize the sales of several recently-upgraded systems with the introduction of an all-new lineup of Macs.

The Mac maker could, however, launch an altogether new computer, keeping the existing Mac range intact.

One system that is overdue for refresh is the Mac Pro. It is rumored that Apple’s powerful workstation is gaining a new design, as well as the usual under-the-hood upgrades it deserves.
