After initially posting a few advertisements for potential US candidates, Apple has expanded its “Maps Ground Truth Manager positions” to the rest of the world.

Apple’s Maps team is seeking managers to take on responsibilities for “regional map quality and ground truth in various territories around the world, including Western Europe, Japan, APAC, Eastern Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa.

“Each of our regional teams is responsible for the quality of our maps in their region,” the job advert reads.

Responsibilities include testing new releases of map code and data, collecting ground truth data to analyze the impact of potential changes in the code, utilizing local expertise to provide feedback, and even evaluating competing products.

Apple expects the managers of these teams “to drive all of this team's work, determine where and how to allocate resources, and clearly communicate test results and other feedback to teams in Cupertino.”

“The U.S. regional team is also responsible for driving communication between engineering teams in Cupertino and our other regional teams, as well as evaluating new regional testing initiatives in close coordination with the rest of the Maps quality team before those initiatives are rolled out to the other regional teams,” according to the iPhone maker.

Education-wise, Apple requires a bachelor's degree in any field (CS or Geography/GIS preferred), and a “willingness to travel to locations around Japan as needed, as well as occasional travel elsewhere in APAC and to the U.S.”

Apple is making considerable efforts to improve its mapping service across iOS devices following a backlash from the user base.

Debuted in iOS 6, Apple Maps has garnered negative reviews for inaccurate directions and landmarks.

There have even been reports of people being stranded in remote areas of the globe after Apple’s Maps application misguided them.
