Following the release of an EFI firmware update for 2010 MacBook Pros, Apple proceeded to increment the EFI firmware versions of two more Macintosh computers with similar adjustments.

EFI Firmware Update 2.1 for Apple’s discontinued MacBook and EFI Firmware Update 1.5 for 2010 Mac mini models are both tasked with enabling Lion Recovery from an Internet connection.

For Mac mini computers in particular, the update addresses an issue with the reboot function, according to Apple.

In a technical note posted on Support / Downloads, Apple says “This update enables Lion Recovery from an Internet connection on Mac mini (Mid 2010) models and addresses an issue where the setting to restart after a power failure may not be retained.”

The company then directs customers to the Lion Recovery marketing page for more details on this feature.

Detailed in a broader manner, “Lion Recovery lets you repair disks or reinstall OS X Lion without the need for a physical install disc. Since Lion Recovery is built into your Mac, it’s always there when you need it," says Apple.

"Even if you don’t need it, it’s good to know it’s there. And you don’t have to search through original packaging to find install DVDs to get your Mac back up and running."

As usual, customers are informed that the EFI Firmware Update will update the EFI firmware on their computer, which means that the power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source.

EFI updates are not something you want to mess around with. A failed install could result in a trip to the Apple store.

“When your MacBook restarts, a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update,” Apple says. “It will take several minutes for the update to complete. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your MacBook during this update.”
