New printer drivers are available for owners of a Macintosh computer running OS X 10.7 Lion or OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard, according to a couple of technical notes posted over at support.apple.com/downloads.

HP Printer Drivers v.2.8 OS X and Epson Printer Drivers v2.9 OS X are both hefty downloads that are tasked with adding the latest printing and scanning software for OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6, aka Snow Leopard.

The HP package weighs in at 515.44 MB and targets version 10.6.1 of the Snow Leopard operating system. The drivers apply to any version of Lion.

The Epson Printer package is almost a gigabyte large (972.36 MB) and targets all versions of OS X Lion and OS X Snow Leopard.

Supported languages for both downloads include Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Both OS X Lion and Mac OS X 10.6 provide third-party software for printers or scanners via Software Update.

All customers need to do is connect their printer or scanner and the software will be automatically downloaded as part of the creation of the printer/scanner queue, if software is needed and available.

Apple asks customers to note that if they haven't used Software Update in a while they should run it just in case before connecting a printer or scanner. This will ensure that the Mac’s database is updated on what software may be available for their hardware.

To view the complete list of printers and scanners that are supplied by Software Update, Apple has published a huge chart where users can employ their browser's Find feature and look for a specific name or model number. The document in question lists software provided for printers and scanners as of 27 October 2011.
