Apple has issued a new software update for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard customers that use a Canon printer with their computer setup. The ‘Canon Printer Drivers v2.5 for Mac OS X v10.6’ is a free download from the company’s Support Downloads site.

A technical note posted by Apple reveals the purpose of said update:

About Canon Printer Drivers v2.5 for Mac OS X v10.6

This update installs the latest software for your printer or scanner.

Those looking for more information are directed to a knowledge base article, where they can see a list of supported printer models, including the specific Canon printer models supported by Snow Leopard.

They are listed in the hundreds, with model and version number designations for each.

The document also explains a thing or two about installing printer software on a Mac, with Apple noting that Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard installs software supporting the printers currently used by one’s Mac, nearby printers on the network, as well as popular printer and scanner models.

The printer and scanner software that was originally made available on the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD is long obsolete, therefore incremental updates (such as Canon Printer Drivers v2.5) are required to continue using a certain printer under a certain version of Mac OS X.

Today’s update, for example, is to be applied on systems running Mac OS X 10.6.1 or later.

The software available with Snow Leopard may also allow users to scan or send faxes when using a multifunction printer, according to Apple.

Mac users can either download Canon Printer Drivers v2.5 by selecting Software Update from their Macs’ Apple menu, or by downloading the standalone installer from Apple’s Downloads area.
