Apple has added PBS and Yahoo Screen to the list of channels available through Apple TV. Customers aren’t required to download and install any new software, though old firmware versions may not be supported.

Owners of an Apple TV set-top box now have full access to a PBS app, which offers more than 5,000 hours of content. Users can either sign in with their PBS account or their social network of choice (Facebook, Google+).

PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) is one of the biggest content providers for public television stations in the United States. The network is responsible for series such as Sesame Street, PBS NewsHour, Masterpiece, Frontline, and Antiques Roadshow.

Yahoo Screen is also available on Apple TV now, following a formal announcement from the Internet giant.

“Just over a month ago we launched Yahoo Screen for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad with the goal of bringing a channel surfing experience to your fingertips. Today, we’re excited to bring Yahoo Screen to Apple TV,” the company said in a blog post.

Yahoo enumerates some of the key offerings through its new service, naming popular shows like The Colbert Report and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

“Yahoo Screen on Apple TV helps you quickly find all the great video Yahoo has to offer — Saturday Night Live, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, live news and events, music and original Yahoo programs — so you can enjoy on your big screen,” says Yahoo.

The web behemoth promises to deliver even more in the future, with a focus on all Apple devices, not just the $99/€109 Apple TV set-top box.

“This is just the beginning of our effort to bring you the best possible video experience, on any of your devices - iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Apple TV - at any place or time. Stay tuned for more to come,” Yahoo concludes.
