Apple has released a new update for Apple TV owners, updating the system's software to version 2.3.1. Documentation is not yet available for the update. However, according to those who've updated their Apple TV's software, third-party hacks such as boxee (unsurprisingly) go missing after installing the update.

According to Apple, “It is always a good idea to make sure you have the latest software update for your Apple TV.” To update the Apple TV to the current software version, users must follow a few steps. Readers should note that Apple TV Software Update releases will not appear in their Mac's / PC's Apple Software Update utility app, or on Apple's Downloads section. The only way to update your Apple TV's software is this:

1- Select Settings > General using your Apple Remote.

2- Select Update Software.

3- At this time your Apple TV checks to see if an update is available and a Download Now message should appear.

4- Select Download Now to start the download process.

5- When the update has finished downloading, an Update Now message should appear.

6- To start the update process, select Update Now. During the update process, your Apple TV will conduct a restart which is followed by the Apple logo and a status bar.

Note: On some TVs, the screen may display black for up to 15 minutes and the Apple TV may flash an amber light; this is expected behavior. Do not unplug your Apple TV during the update process.

7- After the final restart, your Apple TV plays the opening video and returns to the main menu.

Apple previously attempted to kill the USB boxee hack with the release of Apple TV Software Update 2.3 last year in November. With little to no other changes being reported in the 2.3.1 release, we are left to believe that Apple is doing everything in its power to reduce the number of Apple TVs using the boxee hack.
