New deal hints at a new Apple TV hardware refresh, this fall

The latest Apple TV was released exactly 888 days ago, in March of 2012. Apple has issued regular software updates to the old hardware, but there is no saying if or when the tech giant will release a new Apple TV. Today, Apple launched a new giveaway related to the London iTunes Festival. Users can get a discounted Apple TV if they buy it until the end of September.

The Apple TV is one of the most appreciated streaming boxes around. So appreciated, in fact, that Apple didn't even bother to update the hardware for more than two years. The new promotion may be the way Apple tries to lure customers to get the old Apple TV at a discounted price, before a hardware refresh.

The price dropped from $99 (€74.20) down to $74 (€55.46). All you have to do is get the Apple TV for the regular price and you will receive a $25 (€18.74) iTunes Gift Card. The Card is only usable in iTunes US so be sure to get it only if you are using that store.

Apple linked this promotion with the London iTunes Festival, an event that will happen all next month. Apple TV users can watch the live performances on their streaming box.

The Apple TV is a small puck-shaped box that measures 0.9x3.9x3.9 inches (23x98x98 mm). It runs on the Apple single-core A5 chip, and it needs your iPhone or an Apple Remote to browse through the channels. You just need high speed wired or wireless Internet and you are good to go. You can stream HD content from your Mac, iPhone or iPad, buy or rent HD movies and TV shows, watch Hulu, Netflix, ESPN or listen to the stuff you have in iCloud or iTunes Radio.

The content providers list for Apple TV is an ever-growing one. ABC and Fox are the most recent ones. Apple is expected to launch a new version of the software for Apple TV soon. The beta version has a redesigned interface and will bring some new features.

Apple prides itself with the easy setup of the Apple TV. You just need to plug it into a power outlet and point it to a network connection, plug in the HDMI cable and you are all set. You can also set it up by taping your iPhone to the box and pairing it via Bluetooth. All it needs is your iTunes account and the settings and payment info will be transferred over.
