After updating Apple TVs to version 4.4 delivering numerous enhancements and new features, Apple found that it was necessary to release another update to address issues experienced by some customers. However, the 4.4.1 update didn’t do much to fix the troubles and, in fact, brought one issue of its own.

Released earlier this month around the iOS 5 launch, Apple TV 4.4 delivered Photo Stream support, AirPlay Mirroring, NHL, the Wall Street Journal, New Slideshow themes and Netflix subtitle support.

A 4.4.1 update was later released to address an issue that required a small number of Apple TV units to be connected to iTunes in order to complete the update.

Some customers, however, are still experiencing troubles. Apple is now offering Apple TV 4.4.2 for download. Before updating to software update 4.4.2, customers are urged to read a new Support article over at Apple’s site.

Knowledge base article TS4107 says “Apple TV devices with software version 4.4 and 4.4.1 have an issue with updating software to later versions.”

In usual manner, the Cupertino giant is offering a resolution and apologizes for the inconvenience:

Resolution

The recommended way to resolve this is by going to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings, prior to updating. If you apply the software update without resetting all settings first, the updater will reset the settings for you. Once the Apple TV has been reset, you can then successfully update to the latest software by going to Settings -> General -> Update Software.

We recognize that this is an inconvenience and apologize.”

For those who wish to download the Apple TV 4.4.2 IPSW (build 9A336a) and restore with their computer, the file can be obtained here. Hopefully this new release will put an end to all the woes experienced by users since the launch of the 4.4 update.
