Apple has updated its enterprise framework for developing scalable Web applications using proven object-oriented design principals. WebObjects 5.4.3 addresses a number of issues found in previous versions of the software aimed at devs looking to deploy WebObjects applications.

According to Apple's Support page, WebObjects 5.4.3 addresses issues in the areas of runtime database interaction, Direct to Web, and field validation, among others. Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later with Xcode 3.1 (or later version of the Developer Tools) are required to update to the new version of the software. According to the company, the WebObjects Update 5.4.3 addresses the following issues:

- EOF Database snapshot not updating; - Webassistant not available for D2W apps; - Exceptions when using WOTextField with formatters; - Duplicate primary keys generated by FrontBase JDBC Adaptor under load; - Additional issue fixes.

Besides the required Xcode 3.1 and Mac OS X 10.5.3 (or later), Java 5 is also needed to install the WebObjects 5.4.3 update. According to the Mac maker, you must install the software in the following order:

- upgrade to 10.5.3 or later, and the latest Java 5; - if not already installed, run the installer for Xcode 3.1 or later; - select the WebObjects install packages; - following installation of Xcode, download and install the WebObjects 5.4.3 update.

NOTE: WebObjects 5.4.3 update for Mac OS X 10.5 Server requires Mac OS X Server 10.5 or later and Java 5.

Apple notes that WebObjects 5.4.3 is tested to work with the default Xcode installation location. The software is NOT guaranteed to work with other installation locations. Also note that the upgrade installer always updates the default location for WebObjects frameworks.

WebObjects 5.4 for Leopard adds enhancements including improved support for rich Web applications and enhanced integration with the ANT build system. The WebObjects 5.4.3 update is available as a free download here.
