Soon after rolling out iBooks 1.1.1, Apple released version 1.1.2 of the app, which addresses an issue with the software update mechanism, according to its makers. iBooks 1.1.1 introduced the ability to double-tap an image within a book in order to view it in greater detail, as well as the ability to download and enjoy books that include audio and video, among other enhancements.

Developed by the folks at Apple themselves, iBooks is a free application that has been specifically designed to support iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. “iBooks is an amazing way to download and read books,” Apple notes. “iBooks includes the iBookstore, where you can download the latest best-selling books or your favorite classics – day or night. Browse your library on a beautiful bookshelf, tap a book to open it, flip through pages with a swipe or a tap, and bookmark or add notes to your favorite passages,” reads the app’s official description.

Released earlier this week, iBooks 1.1.1 delivered the following updates to e-book reading fans: double-tap an image within a book to view it in greater detail; experience books that include audio and video; enjoy substantial performance improvements when reading PDFs; look-up definitions to English words inside books without a specified language. Version 1.1.1 also addressed an issue that may have caused some book downloads to not complete, and included many stability and performance improvements. Now, according to Apple, version 1.1.2 “Addresses a minor issue when updating iBooks.”

iBooks is compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch (2nd generation), or iPod touch (3rd generation). iPhone and iPod touch users need to have at least iOS 4.0 installed to use the app. While the iBookstore is available in many countries, the selection of books in the iBookstore may vary by country. Additionally, an iTunes Store account is required to download content from the iBookstore. Other requirements include iTunes 9.2 and, of course, an internet connection to download books on the go.
