Apple is at its second attempt to rid Mac OS X 10.7.3 of its bugs with the release of a Supplemental Update that aims to fix a problem for users attempting to restore their machine from a backup image created with Time Machine.

A technical note on Apple’s Support site details the contents of “Mac OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update.” The change log comprises a single line of text with Apple noting that “This update resolves an issue when restoring a Mac from a Time Machine backup.”

Time Machine is an OS X-exclusive utility that enables users to carry out backup tasks. You can set it to automatically back up your entire Mac, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, movies, and documents. Best of all, it’s built right in Mac OS X.

Unlike simpler, third-party backup applications, Time Machine not only keeps a spare copy of every file, the utility also remembers how your system looked on any given day. Users can thus revert to any past configuration whenever they wish.

On OS X Lion in particular, users can even encrypt their Time Machine backup external drive using FileVault 2.

To be noted that, Apple’s Mac OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update doesn’t include all the tweaks and enhancements that were delivered in the full OS X 10.7.3 release last month. For that, you need to download this heftier update. The benefits include:

- Catalan, Croatian, Greek, Hebrew, Romanian, Slovak, Thai, and Ukrainian language support - addressed issues when using smart cards to log into OS X - resolved issues authenticating with directory services - addressed compatibility issues with Windows file sharing.

As avid Softpedia readers will remember, Apple was forced to remove the update from its servers shortly after the official release as customers began reporting glitches.

The update was subsequently reposted to the Apple Downloads site. Today’s release marks Apple’s third attempt to get it right with OS X 10.7.3.
