In addition to releasing a new version of Xcode for developers, Apple this week blessed the Mac App Store with a new OS X Server installment.

Don’t get too excited, though. It’s a bug-fix release which only addresses “various Profile Manager migration issues.” But if your business depends on a good-working OS X Server, this update probably weighs a lot.

A Support document on Apple.com says of the new release, “This software updates OS X Server v3.0 to v3.0.1. It requires OS X Mavericks.”

KB article HT6043 also talks about the Profile Manager fix more broadly, stating that the update actually “improves Profile Manager upgrade and migration from OS X Server (Mountain Lion).”

Since it’s only available from the Mac App Store, OS X Server 3.0.1 will appear in the Updates tab on your OS X Server (Mavericks) installation. Simply click “Update” to install.

Apple says you may see the message “Server app replacement detected” during the installation, which is normal. The Cupertino company also assures customers that their data will be preserved during the update, including all Server settings.

“If you have previously upgraded to OS X Server (Mavericks) and Devices or Device Groups are missing from Profile Manager, you can run the following Terminal command to re-migrate your data from Mountain Lion,” Apple adds, and provides the following line of code.

code
/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB.sh
The company warns Server users that, despite restoring their data from Mountain Lion, using this command will overwrite any changes made in the Mavericks version of Profile Manager.

Download OS X Server 3.0.1 and, after you complete the installation process, fire up the Server app to finish setting up your services. Newcoming customers need to pay $19.99/€17.99 to download OS X Server from the Mac App Store.
