Apple has released a new in-house-developed application for users of its MobileMe cloud service and iPhone owners. MobileMe iDisk is being offered by the Cupertino-based Mac maker for free. Usable on any iPhone and iPod touch model running OS 3.0 Software, the application allows them to view and share files on the iDisk right from their iPhone or iPod touch.

“Log in with your MobileMe username and password (MobileMe subscription required) and you’ll see a list of the folders and files on your iDisk,” Apple explains how the app is used. “Select a file to view it on your iPhone,” the description continues on iTunes. “To share a file with someone else, just tap the share icon, choose your recipients, and MobileMe iDisk will send them an email with a link to download your file directly from MobileMe. You can assign a password to keep your files secure and even limit the number of days the download will be available – all right from your iPhone,” Apple stresses.

The App Store description goes on with MobileMe iDisk’s main features, which include the ability to view files on your iDisk right from the handset, access public folders, easily share files from your iPhone, quickly access recently viewed files, view iPhone-supported file types, including iWork, Office, PDF, QuickTime, and more. Apple also reveals that files larger than 20MB may not be viewable (probably because of the iPhone’s limited memory).

Interested parties should note that MobileMe iDisk requires a subscription to Apple’s cloud-based service. Those who simply want to check out Apple’s offerings without paying a dime can do so, for 60 days, by applying for a MobileMe free trial over at apple.com/mobileme.

MobileMe iDisk supports English, French, German and Japanese and can be downloaded for free on any iPhone or iPod touch model using the link below. Note that the software also requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.
