Apple has posted a 133.99 MB installer package that equips Mac computers with the latest Lexmark printing and scanning software. The download is free and immediately available on Softpedia.

According to a technical note posted by Apple yesterday evening, “This download [Lexmark 2.6 Printer Driver] includes the latest Lexmark printing and scanning software for OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6.”

As noted above, the file size comes in at a hefty 134 megabytes. Requirements include the original version of OS X Snow Leopard (10.6). The newest Lion builds (OS X 10.7.1) are also supported.

There are no requirements listed hardware wise, though it is clear these drivers only apply to Intel hardware, since both Snow Leopard and Lion require an Intel CPU.

Lexmark 2.6 Printer Driver supported languages include Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Those looking for more information on printer driver software for Mac OS X are directed to knowledge base article HT3669 where the Cupertino tech mammoth outlines that “OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6 provide third-party software for printers or scanners via Software Update.”

Apple instructs customers to simply connect their printer or scanner, “and if software is needed and available, the software will be automatically downloaded as part of the creation of the printer/scanner queue,” according to the instructions dished out in the document.

Customers are also reminded to run Software Update before connecting a printer or a scanner to update their Mac’s database on what software is available, if they haven’t done so in a while.
