Extends RAW image format compatibility to Aperture 3 and iPhoto '09 for new Canon, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony cameras

Cupertino has spit out a new compatibility update for new support of Digital Camera RAW files needed on Macs running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard or Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard (and greater) with Aperture 3 and/or iPhone ‘09 installed.

In usual manner, Apple has posted information about Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.3 on the Support Downloads area of its web site. According to the company behind the Mac operating system, “This update extends RAW image format compatibility to Aperture 3 and iPhoto '09 for the following cameras:

- Canon PowerShot SX1 IS - Olympus E-PL1 - Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 - Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10 - Samsung NX10 - Sony Alpha DSLR-A390 - Sony Alpha NEX-3 - Sony Alpha NEX-5”

Version 3.3 of the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update weighs in at 5.68 MB and requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) or Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard) or later, and supports several languages including Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Dansk, Norsk Bokmål, Polski, Português, Português Brasileiro, Pусский, Suomi, Svensk, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Apple directs customers to knowledge base article HT3825 for more information on supported RAW formats. There, Apple explains that “Many digital cameras offer options to save pictures in digital camera RAW format. […] Digital camera RAW formats retain more image information than JPEGs and can produce better results when used with imaging applications such as Aperture and iPhoto. Mac OS X Snow Leopard provides system-level support for digital camera RAW formats,” Apple adds, and proceeds to include a list of cameras supported by its operating system. The newest cameras will always need the latest RAW compatibility update from Apple which acts as a driver.

Mac users can have Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.3 downloaded and installed automatically via the Software Update mechanism accessible from the Apple menu in Mac OS X. Alternately, the update can be applied by downloading the software manually from Apple’s Downloads area, or from Softpedia.
