Devs can now manage metadata localizations for each individual app

Developers working with iOS 5.0.1 now have the option to edit the default language for app metadata at any time, Cupertino has announced.

On its Developer site, Apple informs developers that if they have multiple apps, they can now manage metadata localizations for each individual app.

“Any localizations you add will be displayed automatically based on customers’ OS or iOS language settings. Otherwise, the default language you select will be displayed to all customers,” says the company.

The latest version of the iTunes Connect Developer Guide reveals that the primary language used to enter app details for display on the App Store will be set as the default one.

“For example,” Apple says, “if you select French from the drop down, we expect that you will be uploading your metadata and assets in French. Subsequently, your metadata and assets entered in French will display in all App Stores worldwide unless you specify individual localizations.”

With the exception of App Description and Keywords, all information will be pre-populated from the native app. This includes the screenshots that a developer has already uploaded.

The iTunes Connect guide stresses that “all of the same metadata fields that are required during the initial app creation, are also required if you choose to add other languages. If you do not upload new screenshots, the previous English (or default language) versions will be used,” Apple says.

Developers can edit existing localizations and, if they no longer want to manage one language, they can delete it from their version at any time by choosing the language they want to delete. It’s only a click away, according to the guide.

iOS 5.0.1 was released late last year and now Apple is testing iOS 5.1 builds internally. iOS hackers expect an incremental iOS 5.0.2 from Apple with various bug fixes, and a patch that closes all existing jailbreaks.
