Owners of an Epson or Lexmark printer using a Mac running Mac OS X 10.6 should learn that new drivers are available for a better integration of their hardware. Available as free downloads from Apple, as well as from Softpedia, the new drivers apply solely to Snow Leopard.

“Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard includes software for many printer and scanner models,” Apple says on the Support section of its website. “This software can be installed from the Snow Leopard Install DVD, and installed or updated by using Software Update (some models have software available through Software Update only),” the company reveals. This is the case with the two drivers in question.

Talking about the Epson Printer Drivers v2.2 for Mac OS X v10.6.1, Apple reveals that, “This download includes the latest Epson printing and scanning software for Snow Leopard.” Still, the requirements reveal that the update can be applied on “Mac OS X 10.6.1 or later.” The Lexmark Printer Drivers v2.2 for Mac OS X v10.6 are for Mac OS X 10.6 or later. Apple claims that, “The Lexmark Printer Driver Update includes the latest drivers for printers you have used on your system.”

For users of any of the two printers (as well as other-brand units), the Mac maker has posted Support article HT3669, which talks about printer and scanner software. It includes a lengthy list of printer models supported by Snow Leopard. This list is updated as new printer and scanner software becomes available through Software Update. The document also contains a table dedicated exclusively to printer drivers included with the Mac OS X 10.6 installation DVD.

Apple claims that, “Printing in Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard is easier and better than ever,” but if you still need more information about setting up and using printers in Snow Leopard, the company has prepared this guide for you.
