Today, Cupertino-based Apple officially confirmed that its latest Mac platform release, namely OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, has been downloaded for more than three million times in the first four days of availability.

The new platform version becomes the most successful OS X release, Apple notes. This is the ninth major iteration of the company’s desktop operating system.

Mountain Lion was made available for the general public with more than 200 new features inside and can be purchased for only $19.99 (US) via the Mac App Store.

The new release can be applied as an upgrade to Lion or Snow Leopard. It is available for free for those users who purchased a new Mac after June 11, 2012.

Previous reports suggested that Mountain Lion might have been downloaded over 2 million times in the first two days of availability, accounting for over 3 percent of all Mac web traffic.

“Just a year after the incredibly successful introduction of Lion, customers have downloaded Mountain Lion over three million times in just four days, making it our most successful release ever,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

Some of the main features that the new platform release comes to the market with include the all new Messages app, Notification Center, system-wide Sharing, Dictation, AirPlay Mirroring and Game Center.

In Mountain Lion, users will be able to easily set up their Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Messages, Reminders and Notes, and have everything synced with other devices courtesy of iCloud.

According to Apple, an upcoming software update for Mountain Lion will be meant to enable yet another appealing feature in the operating system, namely Facebook integration.

“In addition to Mountain Lion, the Mac App Store offers thousands of apps in Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity, Utilities and other categories, and is the largest, fastest growing PC software store in the world,” Apple also notes.
