Packed full of announcements, Apple’s September 1 press event saw the introduction of iOS 4.1, the next major update to iOS 4, as well as a sneak peek at the upcoming iOS 4.2 software update for iPads.

According to a web page dedicated entirely to the new software update, Apple plans to bring some of the features originally introduced in iOS 4.0 over to the iPad.

These include application folders, multitasking, and others. Apple previously noted that iOS 4 was due for iPad in Fall 2010.

Now, not only does Apple plan to port all the cool iOS 4 functionality over to the iPad, the company also wants to pack even more features, in a move that further strengthens the iPad’s position as a lightweight office tool.

“iOS 4 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system,” Apple stresses on its web site.

“And soon iPad owners will get to enjoy its 100+ new features and innovations — including multitasking, folders, printing, and more,” the company notes.

“Look for iOS 4.2 coming in November for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch,” Apple reveals.

One feature that Apple doesn’t mention in this small description (but did preview it during yesterday’s event) is Airplay.

Airplay allows users to wirelessly stream videos, music, and photos from an iPad to the new Apple TV.

Additionally, the feature can be employed to stream music to AirPlay-supported speakers or receivers, including AirPort Express.

Since iOS 4.2 will bring all the existing features of iOS 4.1 to the iPad, plus the new ones Apple touted yesterday, the list below should include all the upcoming additions, according to a report by OSX Daily.

- Multitasking - Folders - AirPlay wireless music, movie, and photo streaming - Printing support over wireless networks - Game Center for multiplayer and social gaming - Unified and improved Mail inbox - Search text within Safari - Enhanced enterprise support - Accessibility enhancements - Keyboard and dictionary enhancements

It is very likely that Apple will use the opportunity of releasing iOS 4.2 to the public to further address customer complaints regarding erratic behavior of old-generation iPhones and iPod touches.

iOS 4.2 is to drop this November, Apple said. The IPSW file will be a free download for everyone.
