Apple has officially launched the ‘unlocked’ version of its latest iPhone, meaning you can pick one up in-store, go home and slide in a SIM card and start using it on your preferred carrier’s network, so long as it’s a ‘supported’ one.

Apple makes an important note of the fact that its unlocked iPhone 4S works only on ‘supported GSM networks’, such as AT&T in The States.

For customers who travel abroad frequently, a micro-SIM card “from a local GSM carrier” can be used. “The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint,” Cupertino specifically states.

The description continues, with Apple noting that “The unlocked iPhone includes all the features of iPhone but without a contract commitment.”

“If you don’t want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone is the best choice.”

The phone arrives without a micro-SIM card. “To start using it, simply insert the micro-SIM card into the slot on your iPhone and turn it on by pressing and holding the On/Off button for a few seconds. Then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your iPhone,” says Apple.

The company had originally planned the release of an unlocked iPhone 4S for November 1st. For one reason or another, Apple was late to deliver, but not too late apparently.

Customers can immediately visit the company’s online store at store.apple.com and select their preferred version of the elusive handset - white or black - with its respective storage options - 16GB, 32GB and, for the first time, 64GB. Retail stores also carry the phone.

Those looking to get one with a two-year wireless service plan can start at $199 for the base model (16GB) with AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon.
