A new version of Apple’s professional photography Mac OS X software is now available for download. Aperture 3.1.1 addresses compatibility issues with the iLife Media Browser, improves reliability when upgrading existing libraries, and fixes problems with publishing content to the web. Overall stability is also improved, according to the Mac maker.

On the Support section of Apple.com, a technical note summarizes the contents of Aperture 3.1.1, with Apple noting that “This update addresses overall stability and performance issues, and also includes specific fixes that:

- address compatibility with the iLife Media Browser - improve reliability when upgrading existing Aperture libraries - address issues with publishing photos to MobileMe, Facebook and Flickr.”

Cupertino claims that all users of Aperture 3 should install this update.

The company directs customers to an additional support document for more information about this new Aperture release.

Those who are upgrading their Aperture library from an earlier version of Aperture, need to follow some guidelines to achieve a successful move to Aperture 3.

For example, before upgrading, it is recommended that users perform a rebuild of their Aperture library. This is not a requirement, but it’s better to stay on the safe side, according to the Cupertino giant.

If they choose to do so, users must hold down the Option and Command keys while opening their library in Aperture 1.5 or 2, then click the Rebuild Now button.

Also worth noting is that Aperture temporarily uses extra space on the hard drive during the upgrade process. Apple explains that “This is for the purpose of backing up critical library info and insuring the integrity of your data during upgrade.”

As such, customers must ensure that they have the necessary bytes of space on their hard drive to accommodate the upgrade. If not, Aperture will display a warning dialog, at which point users may need to move their library to another storage location (i.e. an external hard drive).

Apple assures customers that “Any space used by Aperture during the upgrade is released and made available to you again once the upgrade has finished.”
