The promotion began in 2004 bearing similarities to the App of the Week campaign which (fortunately) is still running

Apple has reportedly chosen to discontinue a weekly promotion loved by many audiophiles. Single of the Week worked similarly to the App of the Week promo that sees Apple handing out free titles on a weekly basis.

The campaign, phased out after a full decade of running, gave away free singles from artists and bands spanning all genres every single week. The promo didn’t discriminate on popularity, ratings, sales or rankings, and users were generally pleased with Apple’s initiative.

Apple Support confirms

Until now, that is. According to a user of Apple Support Communities, “I contacted iTunes Support and they told me the decision was made to drop the free Single of the Week.”

The user said this one was of the few things that got him to browse the music venue, adding “Now, there's less reason to go.” Many more users undoubtedly feel the same way.

Same thing happened with 12 Days of Christmas

It may be worth noting that Apple has also killed the 12 Days of Christmas promotion that also ran for years in a row. The Cupertino company also didn’t offer much of a discount on Black Friday (none, actually; only gave gift cards with full-price purchases).

In all fairness, Apple just doesn’t seem to have the public for these promos. However, don’t be surprised if the company greets you with a couple of new campaigns (to replace the discontinued ones) starting this year.
