Apple has sent out the invitations to its long-rumored March 7 event, which is to be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

At 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, the company plans to unveil its next-generation of tablet computers. Or so we’re left to understand from the graphics (pictured above).

The invites bear the following message: “We have something you really have to see. And touch.” If that’s not a hint at the iPad 3, we don’t know what is.

The image used for the invitations depicts an iPad display with a person touching the Calendar application icon that reads Wednesday 7 (for March 7).

Not to be overly speculative but the display does seem to boast a fine net of pixels. In fact, the pixels aren’t at all distinguishable. The iPad 3 is rumored to have a Retina display with a 2048x1536 resolution.

The wallpaper is the same droplet-filled glassy image used to introduce iOS 5. At next week’s event, the iPad 3 will most likely arrive pre-loaded with the final version of iOS 5.1 and a brand new set of wallpapers.

Several hardware leaks have painted a pretty good picture of the tablet device. For example, leaked cases indicate that Apple’s third-generation iPad will be slightly bulkier than the current-generation models.

A dual LED light bar is said to be the culprit here, as the Retina display needs enhanced backlighting to achieve crisp visuals.

The processor inside the tablet - either the A5X or the A6 - will most likely require more battery power as well. There’s a chance the iPad 3 has made more room inside for that as well. The 10-hour battery life is likely to remain in place, though.

Finally, the iPad 3 will reportedly boast a higher-resolution camera.
