Apple has announced new Camp sessions for kids aged 8-12 at its retail stores. Described as “a fun, free workshop where kids become filmmakers,” the Apple Camp lasts for three days and introduces attendees to the basics of moviemaking on the Mac, prepares them for shooting footage in various conditions, and they even have the opportunity to showcase their movie to invited parents, relatives, and friends at a film festival.

“At Apple Camp, kids ages 8-12 will learn the ins and outs of iMovie and how to make a film in about the time it takes to watch one,” Apple states on the Retail Store segment of its website. “From storyboarding to shooting footage to editing, kids will create their own film from start to finish. The workshop, held at the Apple Retail Store, spans three days and leads up to an Apple Camp Film Festival where campers debut their masterpieces. Check out more details below. Space is limited and workshops fill up quickly, so sign up now for a real creative adventure,” the description reads.

Parents /guardians can immediately find an Apple Retail Store near them and sign up. Kids can bring their own digital camera or video camera, “so they can become more familiar with it as they prepare to shoot footage overnight. Campers are also welcome to bring their own Mac with OS X,” Apple reveals. Those who don’t own a camera will only be able to shoot footage inside the Apple Retail Store, where the Mac maker will be handing out cameras from its own shelves.

“All campers under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the duration of the Camp Workshop. Campers must also bring along a signed Camp Permission Statement (PDF) and a copy of their registration confirmation to attend,” Apple adds, and directs interested parties to the company’s Youth Website for a listing of year-round Apple youth and student programs.

On day one, campers will be introduced to the basics of moviemaking on the Mac, and theme selection and storyboarding. They will also prepare for shooting footage outside the store overnight, or inside the store at the end of the workshop. An optional, one-hour Parents Workshop focused on parental controls on the Mac will also be held on day one. This session does not require an additional registration, Apple states.
