As any US resident will tell you, Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, which is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. This Friday, Apple is likely to offer discounts on some of its products. The Mac maker has started sending out emails to those subscribed for receiving regular updates from the company, notifying them of the event.

The term “Black Friday” is said to date back to 1966. The term has become common in most parts of the United States since 2000. Black Friday occurs between the 23rd and the 29th of November, because Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the US. Black Friday is regarded as the busiest retail shopping day of the year, but this is not always so. While it has been one of the busiest days in terms of customer traffic, from 1993 through 2001 Black Friday was usually the fifth to tenth busiest day in terms of actual sales volume.

Apple has posted a teaser on its website, confirming the Black Friday shopping event. The US version reads:

Lots of gifts 1day not to miss The Special one-day Apple shopping event.

This Friday

Come back to the Apple Online Store this Friday for a special one-day-only Christmas shopping event. You’ll find dozens of great iPod, iPhone and Mac gift ideas.

Mark your calendars now. Until then, start your research by browsing the Apple Online Store to find iPod, iPhone and Mac gifts for everyone on your list.

Last year, Apple didn’t exactly blow customers’ minds with price reductions. Discounts make Apple feel like a fish out of the water. The company can’t endure more than one day of lower-than-usual prices, and even that seems to hurt. Those who are familiar with Apple’s M.O. will rest assured there will be small price cuts on iPods, and perhaps iTunes content as well. More expensive products, such as Macs, the iPhone and the iPod touch, usually get discounts too, but Apple isn’t likely to shave off too much for these babies.
