While addressing newly discovered security issues in Leopard, Apple included additional RAW image support for several third-party cameras in its latest incremental update to Mac OS X 10.5. Leopard provides system-level support for digital camera RAW formats from a huge number of cameras, Apple says. The list now includes 14 fresh third-party cameras, revealed by the company in a Support document posted online just hours ago.

“Many digital cameras offer options to save pictures in digital camera RAW format,” the Mac maker informs. “Digital camera RAW formats retain more image information than JPEGs and can produce better results when used with imaging applications such as Aperture and iPhoto,” Apple explains. Mac OS X 10.5.7, the latest version of Leopard, now provides system-level support for digital camera RAW formats from 14 additional cameras. Those are:

● Canon EOS 5D Mark II; ● Canon EOS 50D; ● Canon PowerShot G10; ● Epson R-D1x; ● Pentax K2000/K-m; ● Leaf AFi-II 6; ● Leaf AFi-II 7; ● Leaf Aptus-II 6; ● Leaf Aptus-II 7; ● Leica M8.2; ● Nikon D3X; ● Nikon Coolpix P6000; ● Nikon D90; ● Sony DSLR-A900.

Mac owners can use one of two methods to update to the new version of Leopard. To perform the update via Leopard's built-in Software Update mechanism, choose Software Update from the Apple menu, select the Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update and click Install for an automatic installation of the software. To perform the update manually, download the standalone installer (links available below), double-click the downloaded package and follow the on-screen instructions, followed by a system reboot.

The Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update is recommended for all versions of Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.5.6. The delta update lets you update from Mac OS X 10.5.6 to 10.5.7. The combo installer lets you update from Mac OS X 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2, 10.5.3, 10.5.4, 10.5.5, or 10.5.6 to 10.5.7. Tiger users can download and install the security side of the 10.5.7 update by accessing the bottom link.
