Despite all the excitement regarding the numbers that Apple presented at the Q3 quarterly financial call, there were also a few other interesting tidbits of information that got out. Amusingly enough, one of them is related to the legendary iPhone.

When Apple's CFO Peter Oppenheimer was asked by an analyst about the impact of music phones, such as the ones from Sony, the answer although more of an allusion than anything else sent pundits and analysts into speculation bliss. "We are very confident in our ability to compete in the marketplace. And we're very excited about what we have in the product pipeline, and you know that I can't comment on that," Oppenheimer said. "As regards cell phones, we don't think that the phones that are available today make the best music players. We think the iPod is. But over time, that is likely to change. And we're not sitting around doing nothing."

The iPhone still remains the most popular rumored Apple unreleased product to date. However, with the recent software strings found in the latest iPod nano firmware and this tacit acknowledgement that Apple has at least considered the viability of the device does speak volumes. However there is another factor that many forget? timing. As Oppenheimer said, the cell phones that are available today are not really a threat to Apple's iPod. If and when music playing phones do become a threat, Apple will probably be bringing out its secret weapon, but not until then.
