Archaeologists carrying out excavations in southern Turkey have recently stumbled upon a sculpture of the goddess Aphrodite. The life-sized sculpture, pictured above, is made of marble, and represents the goddess' head.

Live Science tells us that it was unearthed at a site called Antiochia ad Cragum, which is situated on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Due to the fact that it spent hundreds of years buried in the ground, the sculpture is somewhat damaged. Thus, both the nose and the rest of the face are chipped.

By the looks of it, this Aphrodite head used to be part and parcel of a larger sculpture that showed the goddess in her entirety. However, archaeologists have no idea where the rest of the body is.

They suspect that it was destroyed and used to make concrete by people who lived in the area hundreds of years ago.
