A hacker group calling itself Anonymous Africa has started a campaign against the Zimbabwe government and a number of other organizations they accuse of promoting and supporting the interests of Robert Mugabe, the country’s president.

One of the targets was the popular news site IOL, owned by Independent Newspapers. According to TechCentral, the IOL website was disrupted by a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attack on Wednesday morning.

“@iol your website is tango down for supporting the dictator Mugabe,” the hackers wrote on Twitter.

The news organization’s representatives say they’re amazed that the hacktivists have targeted them, considering that they do their best to publish a “multiplicity of views.”

Currently, Anonymous Africa has set sights on the official website of Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Defence.

“mod.gov.zw/ is still tango down! For the genocide of 20 000 ndebele,” the hackers wrote 5 hours after initiating an attack against the website.

The website was still inaccessible at the time of writing.

Another website disrupted briefly by the hacktivists is the one of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (zimra.co.zw).
