The Vogue editor speaks her mind on the controversial cover

Back in March, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West made headlines and history when they appeared on the cover of Vogue Magazine, widely regarded as the Fashion Bible for many fashionistas out there. It was a scandal of epic proportions, since true fashion lovers never really held Kim Kardashian or her husband, rapper Kanye West, in high regard.

To many, the fact that they made the cover was a huge slap in the face, and several people, including actress Reese Witherspoon, came forward on social media to blast the publication and announce that they were canceling their subscription.

Wintour had hoped for record sales, Kimye failed to deliver

Later, it was revealed that the magazine was a flop in terms of sale, despite the fact that is was believed that it was going to be a big hit. The March issue of Vogue with Kim and Kanye on the cover sold less than 300,000 copies, which weren't exactly the numbers Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour had in mind when she conceded to put the couple on the cover.

Radar quotes Anna, who finally speaks on the incident, “I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine.” In other words, Kim and Kanye were never tasteful people in her book, but she decided to put them on the cover anyway and also give them a large photo shoot where Kim posed in wedding dresses as she was getting ready for her wedding at the time.

Wintour now sorry for cover, though she admits it's not the first time she's compromised

Anna explains her compromise, “The first celebrity that I put on the cover was Madonna, and that was considered completely controversial at the time, too,” saying that this was not the first time she went against her principles.

With a sad tone in her voice, Wintour goes on to say that “Now and again one has to do things like that,” the alternative being that “nobody would talk about us. It’s very important that people talk about us.”

However, this time, Anna only managed to stir up waters for Vogue and had nothing to show for it at the end of the day, since the issue sold so poorly. It was jokingly rumored on the Internet at the time that a large portion of magazines were bought by the Kardashians themselves, as Kim and Kendall were spotted in March leaving newsstands with armfuls of Vogue magazines.

It should come as no surprise to people then that Anna is doing this form of mea culpa, basically apologizing to readers that she lowered her standards, but what we can't ever forget is her editorial in that magazine, where she went on to write about Kim and Kanye like they were the next fashion icons of the twenty-first century.
