Fishermen bagging a giant amberjack in the Sea of Cortez could have been in line for a world record, were they not to carve up the fish in order to eat it.

Kevin Shiotani and his team brought the fish on the beach on the Baja California peninsula. Instead of weighing it, they chopped it up into taco pieces and fillets.

The fishermen unfortunately had no way of weighing the fish, not having a scale available on the beach.

The fish appeared to weigh at least 135 pounds (61.2 kg) and could have been over 156 pounds (71 kg), which is the current registered record, according to the International Game Fish Association.

According to Grind TV, it took 25 to 30 minutes to reel in the monster, and it’s the largest seen in the area in recent years.
