A recently published report from Distimo shows a series of rather interesting details regarding the applications available for users of various mobile operating systems, including Google's Android, Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS, Apple's iPhone platform, Palm's webOS, or Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. The report is based on trends on the United States market among major application stores.

Among the findings of the report, we can count the fact that Google's Android Market is the place where users can find the largest number of free applications, while Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile is the place where one can find the smallest number of such solutions. To be more precise, 57 percent of the Android applications are offered for free, compared to only 22 such software solutions available via Microsoft's portal.

Other findings of the report include: - More than 50% of applications are priced below or equal to $2.00 in all stores, with the exception of BlackBerry App World and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. - The average price of all paid applications and the 100 most popular paid applications in the Apple App Store for iPad ($4.65) is higher than in the Apple App Store for iPhone ($4.01). However, the average price of the 100 top grossing applications is higher on the Apple App Store for iPhone. - In the competitive e-reader market, both the iBooks application by Apple, Inc., and the Kindle application by Amazon.com are ranked among the 10 most popular free applications in the Apple App Store for iPad. Apple’s application is ranked number one however, and Amazon’s application is ranked number ten.

At the same time, the report shows that Twitter's mobile application entered the top ten free applications in the Apple App Store for iPhone and in Google's Android Market. When it comes to the Windows Marketplace, five out of the ten most popular free applications come from Microsoft. Moreover, nine out of the ten most popular free applications in the App Store are games (the same applies to eight out of ten most popular paid applications for the iPhone).
